Sheave or pulley?
A sheave is a grooved wheel that guides a belt, rope or cable. Pulley is the broader word: it can mean the wheel alone or the whole assembly of wheel, shaft and housing. In belt drives the terms are often used interchangeably, and a grooved V-belt pulley is usually called a sheave. Wire-rope sheaves are used on hoists, cranes and lifting systems; belt sheaves and pulleys on machinery, fans and HVAC.
Replacing chain or a sprocket: what to send us
Chain size
The ANSI number (for example 40, 60, 80) or ISO size (for example 08B), and single, double or triple strand.
Length
Number of pitches or overall length, and whether you need a connecting or offset link.
Sprocket
Number of teeth, hub style, and bore: plain, finished with keyway, or QD or taper bushed.
Sheave
Belt section (for example A, B, 3V, 5V), number of grooves, pitch diameter and bushing.
Environment
Washdown, corrosion, heat or dust, so we can suggest stainless or specialty options.

Chain, sprocket and sheave FAQ
How do I read an ANSI roller chain number?
The digits before the last one give the pitch in eighths of an inch, so 40 chain has a 4/8 = 1/2 inch pitch and 60 chain has a 3/4 inch pitch. A final 0 means standard roller chain. A suffix such as -2 or -3 means double or triple strand, and H means heavy series.
Can I use ANSI and ISO (British Standard) chain together?
Generally no. ANSI 40 and ISO 08B are both 1/2 inch pitch, but their roller diameters and widths differ, so they do not mesh correctly with each other's sprockets. Match the chain to the sprocket standard, or replace both.
What is the difference between a sheave and a pulley?
A sheave is a grooved wheel that guides a belt, rope or cable. Pulley can mean the wheel alone or the whole assembly. In belt drives the terms are often used interchangeably, and a grooved V-belt pulley is usually called a sheave.
What are QD and taper bushings?
They are split, tapered bushings that clamp a sprocket or sheave to the shaft. One sprocket or sheave can fit several shaft sizes by changing the bushing, and they are easier to install and remove than a plain bore with set screws.
When should I choose stainless or self-lubricating chain?
Stainless chain suits washdown, food processing and corrosive areas. Self-lubricating chain suits places where regular lubrication is difficult or oil would contaminate the product. Tell us the environment and we will suggest the right option.
