A worm gearbox uses a screw-like worm driving a worm gear, giving a high ratio in a compact right-angle package and resistance to back-driving, which is useful on lifts. Its sliding contact makes it less efficient. A helical gearbox uses angled teeth that mesh gradually, so it runs quieter and more efficiently but does not resist back-driving. For quiet, energy-efficient continuous duty choose helical or helical-bevel; for a compact right-angle reducer that holds a load, worm gearing remains a good choice.

The ratio is the motor's input speed divided by the output speed your equipment needs; a higher ratio gives lower speed and more torque. Mounting depends on how the gearbox fits your machine: shaft-mount reducers such as the Dodge Torque-Arm II or Browning TorqTaper Plus hang on the driven shaft with a torque arm, while foot, flange, inline, parallel and right-angle units are chosen by how the shafts line up. A service factor is a multiplier applied to the load to allow for the real duty: hours per day, shock loads, frequent starts and reversing. A gearbox for a smooth, 8-hour-a-day conveyor needs a lower service factor than one on a crusher that starts under load. The gearbox's rating must meet the load times the service factor.

A one-piece housing, such as NORD's UNICASE design, is machined from a single casting, which helps shaft alignment, rigidity and sealing. A split housing, found on some large industrial drives, can be opened for service in place, which saves time on big conveyors in mining or forest products. The choice depends on whether sealing and low maintenance or in-place serviceability matters more.
