Industrial Gearbox & Speed Reducer FAQ

  • What's the difference between a worm gearbox and a helical gearbox?

Worm gearboxes use a worm screw meshing with a worm gear to achieve high reduction ratios in a compact right-angle package, and they offer natural back-drive resistance (self-locking) that's useful in lift and hoist applications — but they run somewhat less efficiently than helical designs due to sliding contact between the worm and gear.

Helical gearboxes use angled-tooth gears that mesh gradually, producing smoother, quieter operation and higher efficiency at the cost of not being inherently self-locking. If your application needs quiet, energy-efficient continuous operation, a helical or helical-worm hybrid is usually the better fit; if you need a compact right-angle reducer with back-drive resistance, worm gearing remains a solid choice.

  • How do I choose the right gear ratio and mounting configuration for my application?

Gear ratio is determined by your motor's input speed and the output speed/torque your equipment needs — a higher ratio delivers more torque reduction and lower output speed. Mounting configuration depends on how the gearbox needs to integrate: shaft-mounted reducers (like Dodge's Torque-Arm II or Browning's TorqTaper Plus) mount directly on the driven shaft using a torque arm to react torque, which simplifies installation on conveyors and bulk material handling equipment, while inline, parallel, and right-angle configurations are chosen based on how the input and output shafts need to be oriented. Our team can match ratio and mounting to your equipment's actual duty cycle and layout.

  • What's the benefit of a one-piece (UNICASE-style) gearbox housing over a split housing?

One-piece precision-machined housings, used in brands like Nord and SEW-EURODRIVE, are machined from a single casting, which improves shaft alignment, reduces the risk of leaks at housing seams, and adds rigidity that reduces vibration and noise. Split-housing designs, used in some Falk and Foote-Jones models, trade some of that rigidity for easier field maintenance — the housing can be opened for internal service without fully removing the unit, which is valuable on large conveyors in mining or forest products applications where downtime is costly. The right choice depends on whether leak-free, low-maintenance operation or easier in-field serviceability matters more for your application.

  • Which gearbox brands does Jealco distribute, and can you source others?

Jealco supplies gearboxes from Boston Gear, Browning, Dodge, Falk, Foote-Jones, Grove Gear, Hub City, Morse, Nord, SEW-EURODRIVE, Sumitomo, and Winsmith. As an independent distributor, Jealco isn't limited to this list and can source gearboxes and speed reducers from additional manufacturers based on your application, ratio, and mounting requirements — contact us with your specifications.

  • Can Jealco source replacement parts or seals for older or discontinued gearbox models?

Yes. As an independent distributor with access to a global supplier network, Jealco regularly sources replacement gearboxes, seals, and rebuild components for older or discontinued models across multiple manufacturers, including some units no longer directly supported by the original brand.
