How to Read a Winsmith Model Number
Most replacement calls start with a worn nameplate and a number nobody on site can interpret. Here is how the two most common Winsmith formats break down.
D-90 Type SE (legacy 9xx format)
- 9 — D-90 series designator
- 35 — center distance, 3.50″ (10 = 1.00″, 13 = 1.33″, 17 = 1.75″, 20 = 2.00″, 24 = 2.375″, 26 = 2.625″, 30 = 3.00″, 35 = 3.50″, 43 = 4.25″)
- M — input style: C = C-flange with coupling adapter, M = C-flange with quill adapter, blank = non-motorized
- DTS — basic model + reduction: DB, DT, DV, DL, DN, DJ, DSN, DSF, DSR, DD, WB, WT, WU — then S = single, D = double, X = helical primary
- 2000 — shaft arrangement, motor frame, and output style (00 = solid output; 08–10 = hollow bore sizes)
- EK — ratio code. A8 = 5:1, BT = 7.5:1, B7 = 10:1, C1 = 15:1, DN = 20:1, D4 = 25:1, EK = 30:1, FA = 40:1, FT = 50:1, GC = 60:1, running up to 10,000:1

Worm gear reducers are sized by center distance, and the industry has largely standardized on the same ladder. That is why a Winsmith unit and a Grove Gear unit of the same center distance are usually talking about the same mechanical envelope.

Matching center distance is a starting point, not a guarantee. Bolt pattern, output shaft diameter and extension, mounting position, and overhung load still have to be confirmed. Winsmith publishes formal interchange guides for the RD Series against Baldor, Boston, Dodge, Grove, Hub City, and Morse drives — send us the model number you are replacing and we will run the cross for you.

Who owns Winsmith?
Winsmith is a brand of HBD Industries, Inc. It is headquartered in Springville, New York, and manufactures in Springville and in Flowery Branch, Georgia. It is a separate company from Regal Rexnord, which owns the Grove Gear and Electra-Gear brands — one reason we carry both.
What is the difference between Winsmith and Grove Gear?
They are competing worm gear reducer lines from different manufacturers. Winsmith is an HBD Industries brand; Grove Gear, along with the Electra-Gear aluminum line, belongs to Regal Rexnord. Both use center distance as the primary sizing dimension and both offer NEMA C-face motor inputs, so the two lines frequently compete for the same application. Winsmith's RD Series is specifically built to be dimensionally interchangeable with Grove drives among others.
Which one we recommend depends on stock, lead time, ratio availability, and whether your plant already standardizes on one brand's spare parts.
Can a Winsmith reducer replace my Grove Gear, Boston, Morse, Hub City, Dodge, or Baldor unit?
Often, yes. The Winsmith RD Series is designed to be dimensionally interchangeable with the most commonly installed right-angle drives from Baldor, Boston, Dodge, Grove, Hub City, and Morse, and Winsmith publishes interchange guides for each. Matching center distance alone is not enough, though — bolt pattern, output shaft diameter and extension, mounting position, and overhung load all have to check out. Send us the model number you are replacing and we will run the cross before you buy.
What do the numbers in a Winsmith model number mean?
On a legacy D-90 Type SE unit, the leading 9 identifies the series and the next two digits are the center distance in hundredths of an inch — 926 is a 2.625-inch center distance, 930 is 3.00 inches, 935 is 3.50 inches. The letters that follow describe input style, basic model, number of reductions, shaft arrangement, and motor frame, and the final two characters are a ratio code. On current RD Series units the format is style, center distance, output arrangement, ratio, and input adapter, as in U20SL05-56. The decoder above walks through both.
My Winsmith gearbox is obsolete. Can you still get parts or a replacement?
Usually. Send a clear photo of the nameplate to sales@jealco.com. We will decode the size, ratio, reduction stages, shaft arrangement, and motor frame, then quote either a current Winsmith equivalent or an interchangeable unit from another line we carry if that gets you running sooner.
Do you stock washdown and stainless steel worm gear reducers?
Yes. Winsmith offers stainless SE reducers in 2.00-inch, 2.625-inch, and 3.50-inch center distances with ratios from 5:1 to 360:1, plus stainless conveyor drives and stainless gearmotors. The RD Max variant adds stainless output shafts, IP66 sealing, and food-safety blue plugs. On the Regal Rexnord side we supply Grove Gear SS Series stainless and WASHGUARD epoxy-coated units. For incidental food contact, SE Encore units ship with NSF H1-registered Mobil Glygoyle 460 synthetic lubricant.
Worm gear or helical — which should I specify?
Worm reducers are compact, inexpensive per unit of ratio, quiet, and can be self-locking at high ratios, but efficiency falls as ratio climbs, which shows up on your power bill on drives that run continuously. Helical inline, helical bevel, and helical-hypoid units run substantially more efficiently and are worth the higher purchase price on high-duty-cycle drives. If your application runs 24 hours a day, ask us to price both and compare the operating cost, not just the quote.
