Belt-speed and capacity relationships follow standard belt-conveyor engineering practice (CEMA, Belt Conveyors for Bulk Materials ). The bulk-capacity mass equation Q = A·V·ρ ÷ 33.333 is the imperial form of Q = 3.6·A·v·δ (metric). The "estimate from belt width" option uses the simplified A ≈ k·B² factor (k = 0.075 / 0.090 / 0.105 for 20° / 35° / 45° troughing at ~20° surcharge); it is a first-pass approximation and can differ from CEMA table values by roughly 25%, so it is labeled as an estimate. How do you calculate conveyor belt speed?
Belt speed equals π times the drive pulley diameter times its rotational speed. In imperial units with the diameter in inches: speed (ft/min) = π × diameter × RPM ÷ 12. A 12-inch pulley at 100 RPM moves the belt about 314 ft/min.
How do you calculate conveyor capacity in tons per hour?
Multiply the loaded cross-sectional area of material on the belt (ft²) by the belt speed (ft/min) and the material bulk density (lb/ft³), then divide by 33.333. The cross-sectional area depends on belt width, idler trough angle, and the material's surcharge angle — take it from a CEMA table for an accurate result.
What is surcharge angle?
The surcharge angle is the angle the surface of the conveyed material forms as it rides on a moving belt — typically 5° to 30° below the material's static angle of repose. A larger surcharge angle lets the belt carry more material, increasing capacity.
Does incline reduce conveyor capacity?
Yes. The formulas here estimate a level conveyor. Inclining the belt reduces usable capacity (and requires more power); CEMA publishes incline correction factors for design sizing.
