IRONMAN GR Series
The core cast iron line and the one most often found on an existing conveyor drive. One-piece fine-grained cast iron housing, bronze alloy worm gear, tapered roller bearings on the output shaft for overhung and thrust load, Viton double-lip seals, and O-rings on the input and output covers in place of gaskets and sealants.

NH Series
Same gearset ratings as the GR unit of the same size in a narrower housing, for drives where the mounting envelope is the constraint rather than the torque. Useful on packaging frames and conveyor side rails where a standard GR housing will not clear.

SS Series Stainless
316 stainless housing and covers with a 303 stainless output shaft, for meat, poultry, dairy, beverage, and chemical environments where painted cast iron will not survive the cleaning regime. The stainless worm reducer carries third-party IP69K certification for high-pressure, high-temperature washdown.

WASHGUARD
Not a separate gearbox — a washdown treatment applied to the cast iron GR and Flexaline GRG units, identified by a W
inserted into the style code. The middle option when stainless is more than the application needs but painted cast iron will not hold up to the wash cycle.

How to Read a Grove Gear Model Number
A Grove Gear model number tells you the series, the style, the size, the ratio, the output arrangement, and the motor frame the unit was built to take — in that order.
Cast iron example
- GRG — series. GR is IRONMAN cast iron, GRG is the Flexaline replacement, GRL replaces LEESON IRONMAN and similar, NH is narrow housing, EL is Electra-Gear aluminum.
- WBMQ
— style. The leading
Wmarks WASHGUARD;Qat the end means a quill input rather than a flexible-coupling input. - 826 — size, and therefore a 2.62″ center distance.
- 10 — ratio, 10:1.
- L — output arrangement. L left, R right, D double extension, H hollow. 140 is the NEMA motor frame the input adapter accepts.
Aluminum example
- EL — Electra-Gear aluminum series.
- BMQ — style, motorized quill input.
- 818 — size, 1.75″ center distance.
- 15 — ratio, 15:1.
- L — left-hand output. 56 is the NEMA 56C motor frame.
Style letters also carry the motorized-input codes: DXMQ
is a motorized quill input, DXM
a motorized flexible-coupling input, DXH
non-flanged. These describe the input adapter the motor mounts to, not a motor built into the gearbox housing. Older style codes map forward: MHSC to HMQ, MHC to HM, MH to H.

Who owns Grove Gear?
Grove Gear is a Regal Rexnord brand. Electra-Gear is catalogued as a product line within Grove Gear rather than as a separate brand, which is why you will see EL model numbers in the same size grid as the cast iron GR units. Winsmith, by contrast, belongs to HBD Industries and is an entirely separate company.
What do the numbers in a Grove Gear model number mean?
Reading left to right: series prefix, style code, size, ratio, output arrangement, and motor frame. In GRG-WBMQ826-10-L-140, GRG is the Flexaline-replacement cast iron series, W marks WASHGUARD, BMQ is the style with a quill input, 826 is the size and therefore a 2.62 inch center distance, 10 is the ratio, L is a left-hand output, and 140 is the NEMA motor frame the input adapter accepts.
The size code is the most useful part. Every Grove Gear worm line uses the same 800-series grid, so 826 means a 2.62 inch center distance whether the housing is cast iron, narrow, stainless, or aluminum.
What is the center distance for a Grove Gear 824 or 830?
Size 824 is a 2.38 inch center distance and size 830 is 3.00 inches. The full grid runs from 813 at 1.33 inches to 8100 at 10.00 inches. Sizes 870, 880, and 8100 are offered in the cast iron GR series only.
Can a Grove Gear reducer replace my Baldor, Boston, Browning, Falk, or Morse unit?
Often, yes. Grove Gear publishes its cast iron mounting dimensions as interchangeable with Baldor 900 Series, Boston Gear, Browning Raider, Falk, Morse Invader, and other industry-standard reducers, and the GRL prefix exists specifically as a drop-in for LEESON IRONMAN and similar units. What is the difference between Grove Gear and Winsmith?
They are competing worm gear reducer lines from different manufacturers. Grove Gear, with the Electra-Gear aluminum line inside it, belongs to Regal Rexnord; Winsmith is an HBD Industries brand. Both use center distance as the primary sizing dimension and both offer NEMA C-face motor inputs, so the two frequently compete for the same application. Winsmith publishes its RD Series as dimensionally interchangeable with Grove drives among others. We carry both and will quote them side by side.
What is the difference between WASHGUARD and the SS stainless series?
WASHGUARD is a washdown treatment applied to the cast iron GR and Flexaline GRG units, marked by a W in the style code. The SS Series is a genuinely stainless gearbox: 316 stainless housing and covers with a 303 stainless output shaft. The stainless worm reducer carries third-party IP69K certification for high-pressure, high-temperature washdown. If the line is cleaned with a pressure wand at temperature, specify stainless; if the environment is merely damp or occasionally hosed, WASHGUARD is usually the more sensible spend.
Do you supply Grove Gear gearmotors?
We supply Grove Gear reducers with motorized input adapters, and we will supply the motor with them. The motorized codes in a Grove Gear model number describe the input adapter the motor mounts to: DXMQ is a motorized quill input, DXM a motorized flexible-coupling input, DXH non-flanged. Tell us the frame, voltage, and enclosure you need and we will quote the reducer and the motor as one assembly.
Worm gear or helical: which should I specify?
Worm reducers are compact, inexpensive per unit of ratio, quiet, and can be self-locking at high ratios, but efficiency falls as ratio climbs. Helical inline, helical bevel, and helical-hypoid units run substantially more efficiently and are worth the higher purchase price on high-duty-cycle drives. Grove Gear offers all of them: GR, NH, SS, and EL are worm, while E Series, LeCentric P, and HERA are the helical alternatives. On a drive that runs continuously, compare operating cost rather than purchase price alone.
